Social Media Medium to Business Grow – Lesson from Dell

Dell has made a lot of money using social media. You might think that a major company like Dell doesn’t need “little” Facebook or Twitter. If that’s your thinking, you still don’t get it regarding social media, and you’re missing opportunities to grow your business as a result. Dell has dedicated an entire department to social media, and while you as a one-person shop or two-person team cannot, there are still many lessons to be lear

Lessons About Social Media

Lesson #1: Everyone on Your Team Should Do It

Don’t assign social media tasks to just one person. Dell encourages all of its employees to send tweets and connect with fans on Facebook, and they’ve done so successfully. Everyone on your team needs to do the same, including your independent contractors and certainly any employees.  You or someone else should be in charge of giving guidance on what to put on social media channels so that you don’t give out messages that harm your brand or aren’t effective in promoting your business.  Once that’s done, encourage your people to run with it.  It’s why Dell is able to have 80 user groups, and was able to generate $6.5 million through Twitter deals in 2009.

Lesson #2:  Be Available to Customers

Social media is a medium where business owners can be more available to customers, or at least give that impression.  Dell credits part of its success of using social media to having its employees be available on social media. You may not have the capacity of Dell to operate 80 user groups, but you can consistently manage two or three, and build up as your team grows.

Learning and applying just these two lessons from Dell will lead to a more effective social media marketing campaign.
